Atony of the uterus, also called uterine atony, is a serious condition that can occur after childbirth. It occurs when the uterus fails to contract after the delivery of the baby, and it can lead to a potentially life-threatening condition in which bleeding could be uncontrollable.
The case of uterine atony was mostly caused by several factors such as the age of the mother during childbirth that is more than 35 years of age with the percentage of 36.36% and the case of multiparity with the percentage of 63.63%. Another cause of the uterine atony is a prolonged labor of more than 24 hours. This problem mostly occurs with the percentage of 72.72%. Besides, the interval between deliveries which is less than 2 years and the weight of newborn babies between 2500-4000 grams could also be the major causes of the uterina atony with the percentage of 67.86%.
Based on the results of this research, several treatments could be taken to respond the patient with uterine atony. The treatments could include providng a fundus massage and conducting internal bimanual compression (KBI) and external bimanual compression (KBE).
This research concludes that the most common causes of uterine atony are factors such as ages, the excessive stretching on the uterine wall (multiple pregnancy, hydramnios, macrosomia), a parity, a preeclampsia, a labor induction, and the uterine overdistention.
