<note>Hypermenorrhea is a menstrual blood loss with a total of more than 80 ml and bleeding duration of more than 7 days in a normal menstrual cycle. Hypermenorrhea or menorrhagia can cause iron deficiency anemia. Hypermenorrhea needs to be watched out, because the symptoms of hypermenorrhea are associated with the etiology of pelvic pathologies and coagulation disorders. Perimenopausal age, which ranges between 40-50 years old, is one of the factors causing menstruation bleeding.
This research used a literature review research method by gathering a variety of references from books, national and international journals through the 7-stage Varney approach.
The analysis of various research sources suggested the diagnosis of hypermenorrhea was confirmed based on the results of a thorough laboratory examination including the exhaustive sets of blood tests, thyroid function tests, and pregnancy tests. In addition, this research used other types of examinations to eliminate the causes of clinical pathology such as abdominal and transvaginal ultrasound. Endometrial biopsy or histopathology would have been performed if the examination had failed to detect the etiology of hypermenorrhea or the ultrasound results had shown unclear abnormalities. The management of hypermenorrhea was carried out in accordance with the patient’s condition and needs, as well as after a careful observation of the patient’s acceptance of hormonal and non-hormonal medical therapy. Surgical therapy was also suggested as an alternative in case of therapy failures.
In conclusion, the results of literature review suggest that the management of hypermenorrhea needs to be carried out based on the cause of bleeding and the patient’s condition. Supplementarily, appropriate therapy can enhance treatment effectiveness and even prevent possible complications.
